Most PlayStation fans will recognize the name “Final Fantasy.” Final Fantasy VII was originally released in 1997. Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII was released ten years later, in 2007, for the PSP device as a prequel to the popular PlayStation game. It is an action role-playing game developed by Square Enix. Set seven years before the start of Final Fantasy VII, the plotline of Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII follows a young member of SOLDIER, a paramilitary organization and private military operation of Shinra, whose task is to find the missing SOLDIER Genesis Rhapsodos. SOLDIER is under the control of Director Lazard, the illegitimate son of President Shinra.

Final Fantasy VII Remake

As the game begins, Zack Fair and Angeal Hewley, his friend and mentor, are fighting in Wutai under the orders of SOLDIER. However, during the fighting, Angeal disappears. But she is not the first member of SOLDIER to go missing. The first was Genesis. Zack Fair, the game’s protagonist, embarks upon a treacherous and eventful journey to find Genesis and Angeal. Along the way, Zack discovers a secret project, Project G, and uncovers that it is involved in the creation of Genesis, who eventually becomes the game’s main antagonist. Zack is also able to make connections between Project G and high-ranking SOLDIERS Sephiroth and Angeal Hewley. While Angeal Hewley was Zack’s friend and mentor, Sephiroth and Genesis are both friends of hers. However, Angela does not stay in Zack’s good graces for long, as it is quickly learned by Zack, with the help of the Turks leader, Tseng, that Angela and Genesis have betrayed Shinra. Zack is then tasked with finding and murdering them both. As the game unfolds, the player becomes involved in events such as the war between Shinra, a megacorporation, and the people of Wutai, as well as the phenomena in Nibelheim. Zack befriends many characters along the way, such as Aerith, a young woman whom he encounters in the Midgar slums, and Cloud, a Shinra infantryman. Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII concludes just before the beginning of Final Fantasy VII.

Another popular ppsspp game is Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker, developed by Kojima Production. Released in 2010, Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker was the seventh Metal Gear game to be released. It was also the second Metal Gear game that was designed specifically for the PSP platform. It is an action-adventure stealth game that is set in Costa Rica circa 1974 and follows the adventures of the game’s protagonist, Snake. Snake runs a mercenary unit called Militaires Sans Frontières (Soldiers Without Borders) and is the recurring protagonist of the Metal Gear series. There are two primary gameplay modes for Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker. The first is “Mission” and the second is “Mother Base.” “Mission” is comprised of the action sequences in the game and “Mother Base” is a mode similar to the briefing screen in Metal Gear Solid: Special Ops that functions as an army management mode.

The two types of missions that players are able to choose between are main ops and extra ops. Main ops are the basic missions in the game that follow a specific story. These missions feature goals are dependent upon the narrative and must be played in a specific order so that the player can advance in the game. Extra ops are optional missions that feature more advanced goals with a range of difficulty. These missions could be anything from target practice to stealing top-secret papers. After the completion of each mission, the player’s performance is evaluated, which in turn affects their rank. However, players have the opportunity to repeat missions in order to achieve higher scores and improve their rank. Before embarking upon a mission, the player has the opportunity to choose one of several characters, as well as their weapon of choice.

Players enjoy the unique features of ppsspp games, such as the ability to choose from a variety of characters, as well as the option to play in multiplayer mode. For true PlayStation fans who have played the earlier versions of Metal Gear Solid, this game is incredibly fascinating, as it follows Big Boss as he battles the presence of the Peace Sentinels in Costa to restore the balance of power between the East and West.
